On the right side of the background you see a little bit of the The Arch of Titus
which kind of marks the entrance to the Forum Romanum from this side/direction.

Yes! The one from Nicaea.

So we continued walking down the road.
Soon we should be reaching the street were we would turn left, to the Colosseum.
I looked into this road and tought:
‘Funny, this one is full of small cars’.
We continued walking. Until I abruptly stopped.
"Wait!… What was that?… "
Turned back:
"Isn’t that?
That’s the …
Martin! It’s the Colosseum!!!!"


An awesome moment. There it was just in front of us. Exciting!
We were in Rome.
We were really in Rome!

Wij liepen dus richting het Colosseum.
Volgens de kaart zouden wij al gauw links af moeten slaan …
Ik keek naar links deze straat in en dacht:
Grappig, deze wordt gebruikt om auto’s te parkeren.
We liepen verder maar plotseling stopte ik:
“Wacht! … Wat was dat?”
We liepen terug …
“Is dat niet?
Dat is het …
Martin! Het is het Colosseum!!!”


Een geweldig moment!
Heel spannend om te beseffen waar wij naar keken.
We waren in Rome.
Nu waren we echt in Rome!

Back to Rome and our first impressions of this city.

I was expecting to see a lot of these motorcycles but
the first sight of them parked in a row like this still was funny.

Terug naar Rome en onze eerste impressies van de stad.

Terwijl we richting het Colosseum wandelden zagen wij deze rij motorfietsen.
Dankzij de reisgidsen had ik al verwacht dat wij er veel van zouden tegenkomen
maar toch was het grappig om ze zo op een rijtje te zien.

Several tones of ochre, sienna, yellow, peachy soft pink and cream.
These are the predominant colours of the buildings in Rome.
And from now on I will keep associating these colours with Rome
as they give the city a very characteristic appearance and feeling.

Verschillende tinten oker, roodbruin, geel, perzikachtig roze en crème.
Dit waren de overheersende kleuren van de gebouwen in Rome.
Ze geven de stad een heel karakteristiek uiterlijk en een heel eigen gevoel.
Hierdoor zal ik van nu af aan deze kleuren steeds blijven associëren met Rome.

Op deze foto zie je een gevel van de basiliek Santa Maria Maggiore.
De eerste van Rome’s religieuze gebouwen die wij zagen.

Lonely Planet’s ‘Rome City Guide’ gives a nice description to explain the success of little
"lego-like two-seater" Smart, among Roman motorists:
" it’s fast, highly visible and, best of all,
short enough to park perpendicular to the kerb."
Really. It’s true. I have a picture of one parked like that.
I’ll search for it and show it to you later on.


I do think these cars, and especially the legendary Fiat 500,
added a cute and funny note to Rome’s cityscape.

Eerste indrukken – La macchina! (De auto!)

Lonely Planet’s ‘Rome City Guide’ geeft een leuke uitleg om het succes van deze
Smart tweezitter onder Romeinse automobilisten te verklaren:
"hij is snel, hoogst zichtbaar en, als beste van allemaal,
klein genoeg om loodrecht tegen de rand van de stoep te parkeren."
Werkelijk. Het is waar. Ik heb een foto van één die op deze manier geparkeerd staat.
Ik zal deze foto opzoeken en later laten zien.


Ik vind inderdaad dat deze auto’s, en vooral de legendarische Fiat 500,
een leuke en grappige noot toevoegden aan het Romeinse stadsbeeld.

After dropping our luggage at the hotel we wanted to
get a first impression of Rome of course.
According to the map we saw we should be able to
walk down to the Colosseum.
So here they are.

wij natuurlijk een eerste indruk van Rome krijgen.
Op de kaart zagen wij dat het Colosseum te belopen moest zijn.

The ‘Leonardo Express’.
To take us to Rome’s Termini railway station.
This train had a very high and narrow entrance!
Not very handy for travelers…
(So don’t forget to take along some kind of
muscle pain reliever in your suitcase!)
But as always, there’s the bad (the entrance) and the good:
Compared to our Dutch train ride the ‘Leonardo’ had way more comfortable seats!

De ‘Leonardo Express’.
Om ons mee te nemen naar Rome’s treinstation, Termini.
Deze trein had een erg hoge en smalle ingang.
Niet zo handig voor reizigers …
(Dus vergeet niet om een middel tegen spierpijn mee te nemen in je koffer!)
Maar zoals altijd is er naast het negatieve ook iets positiefs:
Vergeleken met ons zitplekje in de Nederlandse trein, zaten wij in deze Italiaan prinsheerlijk!

Let’s just touch down, straight into Italy, at green looking Fiumicino airport.
Oficially named “Aeroporto Internazionale Leonardo da Vinci (Roma Fiumicino)” .

It was here that my husband discovered he had lost he’s wedding ring somewhere during this journey.
So there we stood in this almost empty hall, in a strange country … what to do?
“Let’s just go and get our luggage. – wich btw took
a considerable amount of time to get ‘spit’ out on the baggage belt
(that’s how it looked like when the suitcases rolled out of that gap/hole on the left of the image) –
We have another train to catch.”

Eindelijk,… Italia!

Ik zal – voorlopig – overslaan en jou besparen:
Nog een vliegtuigvleugel foto;
Het prachtige blauw van de hemel;
De wolken;
De Alpen ( niet zo best zichtbaar) en Italië gezien vanuit de lucht …
Laten we maar in een keer landen op groen uitziend Fiumicino vliegveld.
Officieel “Aeroporto Internazionale Leonardo da Vinci (Roma Fiumicino)” genaamd.

Het was hier dat mijn Lief ontdekte dat hij ergens onderweg zijn huwelijksring verloren had.
Daar stonden wij dan, in deze bijna lege hal … in een vreemd land … wat moesten wij doen?
“Laten we maar de bagage gaan halen – wat trouwens
nogal lang duurde voordat ze op de bagageband ‘uitgespuugd’ werden
(daar leek het namelijk op als de koffers te voorschijn kwamen uit die opening links op de foto) –
want we moeten nog een trein pakken.”

Standing at the train station we realised the taxi driver probably hit the floor because
he must of thought we wanted to catch the train before the one we were aiming for.
That one would have taken us straight to Schiphol … but as we were very much on time
for this earlier train … why wait …
so at half the way we had to step over into a second train.
Schiphol looked pretty much the same , of course.
Only the departure information panels changed since our previous trip to Madrid.
The bird? Similar.
This time we were better prepared to avoid arriving as famished as we did in Madrid.
And as I complained last time, I’ll have to mention it again … only this time
it’s a positive remark:
KLM kept word!
The offered food was really very good!
A colorful nice presentation and deliciously tasting.
My compliments to the chef!

Staand op het treinstation, bedachten wij dat de reden waarom
de taxichauffeur ons in een mum van tijd en op de meest gunstige
entreeplek naar het perron – geen trappen – uit liet stappen, weleens kon zijn omdat
hij dacht dat wij de trein vóór die ene die rechtstreeks naar Schiphol ging, wilden pakken.
We waren keurig op tijd voor deze eerdere trein … de deuren gingen open en de
uiteindelijke eindbestemming was ook Schiphol … dus waarom wachten?
Overstappen in Amersfoort bleek gelukkig niet veel voor te stellen.
Gewoon even naar de andere kant van hetzelfde perron lopen.

Natuurlijk zag Schiphol, vergeleken met afgelopen keer, er nog net zo uit.
Alleen de schermen met vertrekinformatie waren gewijzigd.
De ‘vogel’? Ook praktisch dezelfde.
Wel waren wij deze keer beter voorbereid om te
voorkomen dat wij net zo uitgehongerd zouden aankomen als in Madrid.
En aangezien ik er de vorige keer over klaagde, moet ik het er nu
ook weer over hebben … Alleen deze keer wel in positieve zin:
KLM heeft woord gehouden!
Het eten was echt heel goed!
Erg leuk gepresenteerd en bijzonder smakelijk.
Mijn complimenten aan de chef!
