"… one of the most beautifully preserved Medieval towns in the heart of the Netherlands". *
It wasn’t that difficult to imagine medieval scenes while walking through this town’s streets.

I liked the patterns combination of this image.
It’s a house at Hindelopen.
A small town at the province of Friesland.

Al die verschillende patroon combinaties.
Dat is wat mij opviel.

It’s nice to have rural country land close to home.

Ice curtain
Friday December 21, was a very unpleasant day to be outside here in the Netherlands.
Mist and freezing temperatures made the cold penetrate all the way to your bones ….
But then there was December 22 … Bright sunshine … blue skies … frozen nature …
and photographing Holland just had to hit the road!
Even if only for a short walk through the neighbourhood …

The beginning and the end
On that morning it was hard to leave the warm embrace of the duvet.
Reluctantly I stepped outside my front door into the freezing cold.
Wall bricks were pinkish so I turned around …
While pressing myself against the wall trying to control the shivering I managed to take the left picture and just wished I had plain view of that sunrise.
The right image is one hour before sun really went down behind dark grey clouds.
As I pictured the sunrise I thought it would be nice to also try to capture the sunset.
That’s what your looking at: The beginning and the end of November 19.

‘De Poldertuin’
While we were looking out to the flower fields, dots of colour attracted my attention.
A closer look revealed this garden, ‘De Poldertuin’.
( ‘The Polder garden’ – As this region is ‘polder’ land or reclaimed land).
A very pleasant surprise. And even more surprising: entirely free access!
This unexpected treat definitely made an end to the lack of flower images among my images maps, caused by my allergy, which was having a kind of finger pointing at a sore spot effect on me!
Some internet research learned me that this garden at the town Anna Paulowna, is owned by the municipality.
Each year more than 100,000 flower balls and turnips, are planted and the emphasis lies on tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.
To preserve this garden the municipality collects the balls and turnips and ensures support; the growers from the municipality provide these flower balls and turnips free of charge and
students of the agrarian school do the planting under the guidance of their teachers.
The results of this great teamwork is really gorgeous.
If you are ever in the neighbourhood … it’s worth the visit.

As I already said access to the garden is entirely free!
According to the info at their page –see link bellow – this garden will be at its most beautiful from the end of January up to May, mid-June. That’s when turnip plants and flower balls usually will be flowering.

“De gemeente verzamelt de bollen en knollen en zorgt voor ondersteuning;
de kwekers uit de gemeente Anna Paulowna stellen kosteloos bloembollen en knollen ter beschikking;
leerlingen van de agrarische school nemen onder leiding van hun docenten het planten voor hun rekening;

Flower Fields

I was hoping to get flower images last Sunday.
Well … flowers I’ve got!
Our goal was to see if we could get a glimpse of the famous Dutch flower fields.
Believe it or not we had never seen them!
Maybe because we have to cross ‘a sea’ – over the Afsluitdijk – to get
a-ll-the-w-a-y (*wink*) to the other side of Holland, or
maybe it was because we both have hayfever.
Oh well, whatever the reason in the past,
our digital sensor was the incentive to go now.
We weren’t quit sure we would actually get to see these fields.
So after crossing over the dike we were kind of hanging in uncertainty and then …
‘Did you see the small stripe of colour?’
While stretching out my neck:
‘Yes! Do you think those are the flower fields?’
Before the answer, there they were … on both sides of the road!
Wow! Quit an exciting view!

Prachtig gezicht!

Assembly hall garden
Our Congres Hall … or better said, as I learned today , our Assembly Hall garden.
‘Congreshal’ is actualy how we call it in Dutch.
( But I already warned you about my English, didn’t I? )
One day later then promised … Because of another garden. Our own!
We are having some very beautiful and warmy days here at the Netherlands.
A reminder that it’s also time to tidy up the garden. Even if this means I’ll be sneezing my longs out.
So here’s a starter to keep up with my promise:
A view at the left side garden of our Assembly Hall, at Swifterband.
(update – 2007, March 19: Ahum, … from this perspective, the right side, … to much pollens in my brain when I wrote this, I guess … )
By the way Swifterband is in ‘polder’ or reclaimed land.

Toch?

What’s one of the images that represents The Netherlands?
That’s right!
So if one sees one like this one and the traffic light turns red … !
